Sheffield's COVID-19 Annual Day of Reflection - “One Word for Love”

Sunday 8th March 2026 12pm-4:20pm

Join us for a gentle day of reflection and remembrance as Sheffield comes together to remember those who died, and to celebrate the compassion our city showed to one another throughout the COVID 19 pandemic.

This year’s event, “One Word for Love,” invites you to write a single word on a piece of fabric that celebrates someone special - Joyful, Brave, Resilient, Kind - whatever word feels right to you. Your word could be for a loved one who died, or someone who is important to you, perhaps they supported you through the pandemic. Your word will become part of a temporary public artwork, created from individual contributions from people across Sheffield.

What to Expect

Midday-3pm: Create Your Tribute

You’re invited to drop into Sheffield Town Hall, where you’ll find a warm, calm and welcoming space to reflect, talk, and write your word on a piece of fabric. There’ll be friendly stewards to welcome you to the space and support you. The room is fully accessible with seating, tables and materials provided.

From 4pm: Public Installation & Remembrance

Everyone is invited to gather at the Covid memorial willow tree sculpture in Balm Green Gardens, next to City Hall, where the words will be attached to the sculpture to create a collective artwork.

This will be followed by a short, secular act of remembrance, led by the Lord Mayor. This will be an opportunity for people from across Sheffield to come together in a moment of reflection.

Whether you join us to remember someone you love, to stand in solidarity with others, or simply to spend a moment reflecting on the pandemic, you are warmly welcome.

This event is being hosted by Sheffield City Council in partnership with Compassionate Sheffield.
